About Our Church
A community of faith, family, and Oromo heritage — rooted in Perth, reaching the world.
Who we are
A beacon of faith, resilience, and God's unfailing grace
In 1986, a small group of Oromo believers arrived in Australia from Ethiopia. Amid the challenges of adapting to a new culture, their love for Christ burned brightly. Only a couple of individuals began gathering in a home to pray in Afaan Oromo — no fancy facilities, no large crowds, just sincere hearts lifting praises to their Heavenly Father in the language that allowed them to pour out their souls completely.
As more believers joined, homes became house churches. Through God's faithfulness, the group secured a dedicated place of worship on March 26, 2001, at Perth City Church, gathering every Saturday morning. The fellowship continued to grow steadily as more Oromo Christians found this spiritual home. Though the path was not without difficulties — facing closures and scattering on two separate occasions — a faithful remnant refused to let the flame die.
God opened a new door through Pastor Dalasa, who approached Victory Life Church with a heartfelt request to form a connect group worshipping in Afaan Oromo. Victory Life Church embraced the believers with open arms, and the Oromo Connect Group found fresh joy and spiritual nourishment. Through the determined efforts of the late Kumsa Burayuu, the believers reunited and restarted their worship, learning profound lessons about God's timing and the importance of unity in Christ.
On January 3, 2021, with approximately 20 to 25 committed members, the fellowship was officially registered as an independent church — initially as Gospel Light Christian Church, later renamed Gospel Light Oromo Church. They found a dedicated space at Grace Life Church for their Sunday gatherings, and as the congregation grew, moved to a bigger venue in Hamersley. Today, Gospel Light Oromo Church shines as a beacon of hope in Perth — committed to biblical truth, passionate worship in Afaan Oromo, discipleship, and reaching out with the love of Jesus.
